We tried the viral Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask celebrities love, and here’s our honest review

This viral beauty product’s got great word of mouth — but is it just lip service?

Since launching nearly a decade ago, the Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask has skyrocketed to cult-favorite status among editors, TikTokers and beauty-savvy shoppers alike. On Amazon, the product currently holds a 4.6-star rating out of over 25,000 reviews, with fans praising the potted balm as “magical,” “perfect” and “worth every penny.”

As someone with chronically dry skin and lips, I had to know if the stuff was worth the hype — so I got my hands on a bunch of different delectable flavors and got down to business.

What is the Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask?

While the brand describes its star product as “a leave-on lip mask that delivers intense moisture and antioxidants while you sleep,” there’s no need to save it for nighttime use; many fans of the balm slather it on during the day, too.

First introduced in 2015, it’s made with the brand’s proprietary, antioxidant-rich Berry Fruit Complex along with a trio of nourishing ingredients — coconut oil, shea butter and murumuru seed butter — and vitamin C, another powerhouse antioxidant.

All the flavors

Much like the Bonne Bell Lip Smackers I (and every other millennial) loved as a tween, Laneige’s lip mask comes in a wide range of delicious flavors.

Berry, Gummy Bear, Vanilla and Sweet Candy are the OGs, but the brand’s always introducing new limited-edition varieties; recent additions include Mango, Pink Lemonade and Cotton Candy, and they tend to sell out fast.

I was able to get my hands on the Berry, Gummy Bear, Pink Lemonade and Vanilla versions for my review — along with the limited-edition Caramel Apple flavor, which smelled as scrumptious as you’d imagine.

Celebs who love it

To say celebrities are smitten with this salve would be an understatement. Delilah Belle Hamlin and Julianne Hough have both sung its praises to Page Six Style, while Kate Moss discovered it via daughter Lila.

Kendall Jenner and Ashley Benson both have it stashed in their bags, Kate Hudson‘s said she wishes she’d invented the stuff and Charli XCX has even “turned Ubers around” after forgetting hers at home, joking to British Vogue, “If I had enough money, I would turn the plane around too.”

Other famous fans of the product include Brooke Shields, Drew Barrymore, Kaia Gerber, Alix Earle, Kelly Ripa, Keke Palmer, Nina Dobrev and Sydney Sweeney — the latter of whom Laneige even appointed as its first-ever global brand ambassador in early 2024. Whew!

You can’t go wrong with the original Berry flavor. Elana Fishman

That lil’ spatula is adorable, but easy to misplace. Most of the time, I just applied the mask with my finger, i.e. nature’s spatula. Elana Fishman

Let’s start with the packaging. The mask comes in a round pot, and while you get a fair amount of product for the price (0.7 ounces, or 20 grams), I’m not the biggest fan of balms or creams you have to scoop out of a tub, as they’re inherently less hygienic.

Each lip mask does come with a tiny spatula you can use for mess- and germ-free application, but I’ve already misplaced two of those; it’d be nice to see Laneige add a groove to the lid so you can snap the tool in and keep it secure.

That said, I immediately loved the texture of the product. A mix between a silky balm and a rich salve, it’s surprisingly not sticky, unlike most ointment-type lip products. And each flavor I sampled smelled absolutely fantastic; it’s tough to pick a favorite, but I’m partial to the original Berry. It’s a classic for a reason!

As mentioned earlier, I have very dry skin and my lips tend to get particularly parched during the winter — which is precisely when I chose to test this product. I was delighted to find that when I applied a dollop before bedtime, I still felt it on my lips when I woke up; the mark of a solid lip product, in my opinion. (I’ve tried many that vanished without a trace by morning.)

Of course, I didn’t just use it during the evening — it’s become my long-lasting daytime balm of choice, too. It’s worth noting that the shiny finish might be a turnoff to some; my husband, for instance, said he probably wouldn’t use it because it looked like lip gloss. (Not that I particularly wanted to share my stash.)

Pros

  • Deeply nourishing, with no sticky feel
  • Smells delicious — and so many flavors!
  • Long-lasting

Cons

  • Expensive
  • Pot-style packaging not the most hygienic
  • Contains fragrance, a potential irritant

The bottom line

Overall, the Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask lives up to the hype. Slight gripes about the packaging aside, this stuff really packs a punch in the hydration department and the scents are delightful.

At $24, it certainly isn’t cheap — but a little goes a long way, and you do get a decent amount of product in each pot. Even using it multiple times daily, I could see a single tub lasting six months to a year.

Of course, the hard part’s gonna be trying not to collect them all.

How we tested

For a period of about one month, I tested various Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask flavors both overnight and during the day, switching up my application technique between the included spatula and my finger. Since some on TikTok swear by mixing up the mask in the tub for best results, I tried that as well — but it didn’t seem to affect the product’s efficacy one way or the other.

Throughout my testing, I prioritized the following points:

  • Hydration: I have very dry skin and lips, so this was the most important factor.
  • Staying power: Did the product last for hours/overnight, as advertised?
  • Scent/flavor: Was it pleasant to use?
