Kim Kardashian and Lady Gaga agree: It’s time to start wearing your leggings with heels

Ah, leggings. They’re ideal for a great many activities — from working out to running errands to lazing around the house — and pair perfectly with sneakers, slides and cozy sweaters alike.

That said, you’ve probably never thought of wearing your everyday exercise pants with high heels, and for good reason. With the noted exception of Olivia Newton-John at the end of “Grease,” the combo of spandex bottoms and stilettos has never exactly screamed cool.

That is, until now. Over the past couple of months, we’ve seen several stars style their basic black leggings with decidedly fancy footwear, proving the sporty staple’s not just for spin class.

As with so many modern fashion trends, we can credit this one, at least in part, to Kim Kardashian; she’s been pushing the leggings-with-heels look for years, and is particularly fond of Balenciaga’s “pantashoes,” a $3,000 Frankengarment featuring built-in boots.

But in late September, Kardashian stepped out in an ensemble made up entirely of designer elements — here a Chanel cardigan, there a Balenciaga heel — save for her nondescript black leggings, which might as well have been from lululemon.

The Skims founder’s pal Chrissy Teigen actually did wear lululemon as part of her going-out look during the last days of December, dressing up the athletic brand’s popular Align pant with high-heeled Saint Laurent boots and a luxe velvet baseball cap for a pap walk in NYC.

And in early January, Lady Gaga looked ready to work it — if not work out — in croc-embossed Larroudé stiletto boots and Alo Yoga leggings during a Malibu stroll.

Recent runways tell a similar story; for fall/winter 2023, Schiaparelli, Saint Laurent and Blumarine all showed leggings styled with dressy shoes ranging from glossy slingbacks to knee-high boots.

Ferragamo even threw it back to the ’80s with stirrup styles paired with pointy heels, a look Hailey Bieber later test-drove on the streets of LA in November.

But as the aforementioned A-listers prove, there’s no need to go the designer route to get in on this high-low look.

Simply slip into your favorite yoga pants, grab your highest heels and go anywhere you like — besides the gym, that is.
